Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was the youngest of the children of singer Dionne Warswick, and gospel music legend Cissy Houston. Whitney Elizabeth Houston grew as a child in a household of musicians. Her mother and she began to sing professionally together in the church of New Hope Baptist in Newark when Whitney was only fifteen years old. They performed the back vocals for Chaka Khan's track in 1978 Im Every Woman. In 1981, she briefly worked as a fashion model and also appeared on the Seventeen cover. She also performed the backing vocals for Lou Rawls and Jermaine. She started as a featured vocalist for the New York-based New York Funk band Material. Her vocal quality performance attracted the attention of the major label Arista who signed her in 1983. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut record for an artist in the year. A number of hit singles, such as The Greatest Love of All, Saving My Love For You How Can I Tell You If You Give Good Love and The Greatest Love of All were released from the album setting her up for a Beatles-beating seven consecutive US top 10s. It was the first US year the album had sold more than 3 million copies. After that, it was to be purchased by millions of people around the world and earned her the first Grammy. Whitney was her first album. Whitney was released in 1987, featuring smash songs Where Do Broken Hearts go? and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, built upon her previous success. But it was The Bodyguard (1996) that cemented her position as the top selling album in music. Even though the movie and actress' performance were not highly praised, the soundtrack album with her version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was the top-selling single and album for several months. It sold over 44 million copies across the globe. In the same year she had her daughter Bobbi, Brown married Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group. About this time her well-documented substance abuse began and by 1996, the singer had been using drugs on a daily basis.
