Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963 at Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. In Newark Whitney started singing in the church choir when she was a young child. At the age 15 she joined her mother in the background vocals for Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978.
